Heard on the show
NYC duo Lawrence Chandler and Martha Schwendener spent the ’90s blending shoegaze guitar wash with trip-hop rhythm and dub bass; Beat (1996, Kranky) is where that sound peaked. Critic Simon Reynolds credited them with essentially inventing a distinctively American strand of post-rock — a huge, enveloping sound from just two people. The band has not recorded or performed since its final album, Lushlife (2000).
