Mark Kozelek, formerly of Red House Painters, leads this San Francisco quartet; Ghosts of the Great Highway (2003, Jetset) is the acclaimed debut LP, rated five stars by AllMusic — a critical consensus around Kozelek’s songwriting that’s held for over two decades. “Duk Koo Kim” is named for the Korean boxer Kim Duk-koo, whose death from a 1982 title-fight injury led boxing authorities to shorten championship bouts from fifteen rounds to twelve; Kozelek has a recurring habit of naming songs after boxers, as with “Salvador Sanchez” on the same album.
