The Cinematic Orchestra is a London nu-jazz/downtempo outfit built around producer Jason Swinscoe since 1999, blending live jazz instrumentation - double bass, sax, piano - with sampling and turntablism. 'Flite' appears on their second album, Every Day (2002), released on the taste-making Ninja Tune label; around the same period they created a new live soundtrack for the 1929 silent film Man with a Movie Camera, commissioned in 2001 and released in 2003. Genuinely impressive: their later track 'To Build a Home' (from 2007's Ma Fleur) became a real cultural touchstone, soundtracking a Neil deGrasse Tyson video watched by millions and a trailer for Showtime's Homeland - a rare mainstream crossover for a jazz-downtempo act. Their most recent album is To Believe (2019).
